The type species (holotype) of the genus Neoporphyra is Neoporphyra haitanensis (T.J.Chang & B.F.Zheng) J.Brodie & L.-E.Yang.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pyropia raulaguilarii Mateo-Cid, Mendoza-González & Sentíes.
