Distributional notes
This species, originally described from Suez in the Red Sea, is considered to have been at least partly introduced into the Mediterranean by some authorities (e.g., Verlaque et al. 2015: 181) via the Suez Canal. It was first found in Upper Egypt in 1808 (Bory 1832; Hamel 1931) prior to the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, and Verlaque et al. (2015: 181) postulate the co-occurrence of native and introduced populations in the Mediterranean. The species is now widespread in the eastern Mediterranean (the Levant and Turkey), although it has also been reported from Sicily, the Adriatic (Albania), Greece, and Mediterranean Spain. - (5 Nov 2015) - M.D. Guiry

Habitat notes
from the lower intertidal and upper subtidal down to 18-m depths; epilithic (Huisman, 2002). - (7 Aug 2014) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Found in tropical to warm-temperate seas worldwide (Huisman 2006: 43).
