General environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
A common species in areas of moderate to slight wave action, though patchy in its occurrence; in southern Australia occurs during the summer but on subtropical W. Australian coasts recorded during winter (Womersley 1994: 91).

Type information
Type locality: Fremantle, Western Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 121). Type: G. Clifton; Nov. 1854; Herb. Harvey, TCD (Huisman & Womersley 2006: 49). Notes: Lectotype: TCD, Herb. Harvey, fide A.J.K. Millar 1990: 301 (Huisman & Womersley 2006).
