The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Vertebrata fucoides (Hudson) Kuntze.

Origin of Species Name
Participle (Latin), becoming black (Stearn 1973).
