Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Polysiphonia fibrillosa (Dillwyn) Sprengel

Type information
Type locality: Brighton (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 333). Lectotype: Borrer; July 1807; BM-K (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 333). Notes: See also Kapraun & Rueness (1983, fig. 60).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), violet, refers to the blue-red colours nearer blue (Stearn 1973).
