The type species (holotype) of the genus Ulva is Ulva lactuca Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Ulvaria splendens (Ruprecht) Vinogradova

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), a sombre brown, but often used to indicate darkness of colour (Stearn 1973).
