Nomenclatural notes
Selivanova & Zhigadlova (2009: 325) note that Ulvaria splendens Ruprecht is widely known under the name Ulvaria fusca (Postels & Ruprecht) Ruprecht emend. Vinogradova (1967: 115) but add that in her later work, Vinogradova (1974), with reference to Bliding (1968), stated that the name U. fusca was illegal and accordingly, the correct name for this species should be U. splendens Ruprecht (Vinogradova 1974). They note that this opinion is shared by most Russian phycologists. Brodie et al. (2007: 103) cite Ulvaria fusca Ruprecht 1850: 218 (presumably nom. nov.; see Bliding, 1968: 582). - (7 Apr 2010) - Wendy Guiry
