The type species (type conserved) of the genus Rhodochorton is Rhodochorton purpureum (Lightfoot) Rosenvinge.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Colaconema hancockii (E.Y.Dawson) J.N.Norris.

Type locality: Puerto Refugio, Isla Ángel de la Guarda, Baja California Norte, Mexico; Holotype: E.Y. Dawson; Jan. 27, 1940; Ephyphytic on Gelidium, rocky shore; AHF; Dawson 218a-40 (slides 026-028) (Dawson 1953: 26) Notes: Dawson (1944: 255) notes that the type is located in Herb. AHF (no. 16).
