Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterocladiella caloglossoides (M.Howe) Santelices.

Type Information
Type locality: Isla San Lorenzo, Peru; (Silva & al. 1996: 144) Holotype: At a depth of 5 meters; New York Botanical Garden; Coker 59 (Dawson 1953: 77) Notes: According to Xia & Wang (1999), the type locality is San Felipe, Gulf of California.
