The type species (lectotype) of the genus Jania is Jania rubens (Linnaeus) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Jania pacifica Areschoug.

Type locality: Bahía Petatlán, Guerrero, Mexico; (Taylor 1945: 197, 198) Holotype: W.R. Taylor no. 34-569; 2 Mar. 1934; littoral on rocks in the surf; Hancock Foundation; (Taylor 1945: 197, 198) Notes: According to Dawson (1953: 120), Taylor 34-569 was in box 3631 in the Allan Hancock Foundation Herbarium now at LAM.
