The type species (holotype) of the genus Gymnogongrus is Gymnogongrus griffithsiae (Turner) C.Martius.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Besa divaricata (Holmes) M.S.Calderon & S.M.Boo.

Type locality: Shimoda, Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan; (Masuda, Zhang & Xia 1994: 168) Holotype: March 1894; BM; (Masuda, Zhang & Xia 1994: 168) Notes: Collector: Saida, no. 61a (Holmes, 1896).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), divaricate, spreading at a wide angle (Stearn 1973).
