Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Mesogloia is Mesogloia vermicularis C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nemacystus decipiens (Suringar) Kuckuck.

Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), deceiving (used of a species closely resembling another) (Stearn 1973).
