General environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Occurs intertidally and subtidally to depths of at least 12 m; found on small stones, large rocks and on reef tops as well as on other algae (Wilks & Woelkerling 1995: 556). Occurs intertidally on reefs and in pools and is known subtidally to depths of 85 m; found growing on rock and on algae (Womersley 1996: 183).

Lectotype locality: Western Port Bay, Victoria (Wilks & Woelkerling 1995: 555). Lectotype: W.H. Harvey (communicated by F. Mueller); 1851; CN herb. Lenormand, unnumbered (Wilks & Woelkerling 1995: 555). Notes: Lectotype designated by Woelkerling (1983: 193). Isolectotypes: MEL 588439; L 941.149-249 (communicated by Lenormand).
