The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Orthocarpa magellanica (Foslie) Athanasiadis & D.L.Ballantine.

Type locality: Gulf of St. Jean, Staten Island, Tierra del Fuego Archipelago, Argentina; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 473) Holotype: Racovitza; 8.i.1898; no habitat data on type fragments at TRH; BR; Racovitza collection 186 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 473) Notes: Holotype fragments at TRH C18-3366 (Woelkering et al. 2005: 474).
