The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Phyllotricha decipiens (R.Brown ex Turner) R.R.M.Dixon & Huisman

Type locality: Port Dalrymple, Tasmania, Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 668). Type: BM (Womersley 1987: 424). Notes: Womersley (1987: 424) cites Port Dalrymple (Tamar Est. mouth), Tasmania as the type locality.

Taxonomic notes
According to Silva et al. (1996) the name Sargassum sonderi was misapplied to this species by Grunow (1915 [1915-1916]: 332).
