Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota ciliolata Sonder ex Kützing

Type locality: Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife (De Clerck 2003: 180). Holotype: B 27031 (De Clerck 2003: 180). Notes: The type material consists of a collection of 10 specimens (sporophytes and gametophytes) (Tronholm et al. 2013: 180).
