The type species (lectotype) of the genus Haliptilon is Haliptilon cuvieri (J.V.Lamouroux) H.W.Johansen & P.C.Silva.
Type locality: Port Denison (Bowen), Queesland, Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 235).

Adjective (Latin), twiggy, long and slender or streaked, rod-like (Stearn 1973).
