The type species (lectotype) of the genus Mesophyllum is Mesophyllum lichenoides (J.Ellis) Me.Lemoine.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Magnephycus engelhartii (Foslie) Athanasiadis & D.L.Ballantine.

Type locality: Cape Jaffa, South Australia, Australia; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 349) Lectotype: [A. Engelhart]; 1900; no habitat data on type; TRH; B18-2595 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 349) Notes: Wilks & Woelkerling note: Collector not indicated but likely to be August Engelhart; date not indicated; designated by Adey in Adey & Lebednik (1967: 69). Holotype: TRH, unnumbered (Riosmena-Rodriguez & Vásques-Elizondo 2012).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Found intertidally in pools and on reef edges and subtidally to depth of 15 m; substrata include rock, molluscs, sponges and various green, brown, and red algae (Womersley 1996: 197).
