Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Boreolithothamnion glaciale (Kjellman) P.W.Gabrielson, Maneveldt, Hughey & V.Peña.

Type locality: Tusteren [now Tustna], north of Kristiansund, Norway; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 428) Holotype: M. Foslie; 10.viii.1898; collection depth: 3-4 fathoms; TRH; C9-3089, includes slides 309, 310 and 1644 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 427) Notes: Isotypes: PC, unnumbered, General Herbarium box collection (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet under basionym); BM, algal box collection 722.
