Syntype localities: Kara Sea: Actinia Bay at 76º8' N 90º25'E and Uddebay (east coast of Novaja Zemlya) at 74.5ºN (Athanasiadis & Adey 2006: 90). Holotype: F.R. Kjellman; On pebbles and stones. UPS unnumbered (Athanasiadis & Adey 2006: 90). Notes: Holotype labeled 'Lithothamnion foecundum orig. ex.' and including five slides B3: 96-B3100 labeled 'Lithothamnion foecundum Kariska havet...'.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), fruitful, fertile (Stearn 1973).
