This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondrus crispus Stackhouse
Origin of species name
Participle B (Latin), spreading, outspread, diverging from the axis at almost 90 degrees (Stearn 1973).

The original material from Cornwall and Devon in England is representative of the highly polymorphic species Chondrus crispus. Later authors have used the name to apply to an unrelated species of Gymnogongrus. - (14 Jun 2008) - Wendy Guiry
