Taxonomic notes
The conspecificity of Helminthora divaricata in the Mediterranean (see, for example, Cormaci, Furnari & Alongi 2017: 160, et seq.) and in the NE Atlantic (e.g. Cunningham, Guiry & Breeman 1993) requires futher investigation as the NE Atlantic species occurs exclusively on Polyides rotunda a species that does not occur in the Mediterranean. The terasporophyte is also an exclusive endophyte in Polyides in the NE Atlantic. The lectotype locality is Cadíz in Atlantic Spain. - (19 Dec 2017) - M.D. Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Common names

(as Helminthora divaricata (C.Agardh) J.Agardh)
English: Spreading Worm Weed (Bunker et al. 2010).

Description
Cylindrical, softly gelatinous, pale reddish-brown fronds, 2 mm wide, 200 mm long. Much branched, ultimate branchlets short, irregular, holdfast small, discoid.

Habitat
A summer annual (May or June-September or October), epiphytic on Polyides rotundus in lower tidal pools and in the shallow subtidal, widely distributed on western and south-western coasts, sporadic but often locally abundant, particularly in large, sady pools.

Key characteristics
Association with Polyides rotundus; gelatinous consistency, and profuse, almost pinnate branches.

Similar species
Nemalion helminthoides is broader, deeper red in colour, and does not have as many branches; Nemalion does not occur in pools.
