The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Orthogonacladia rectangularis (A.H.S.Lucas) G.H.Boo & T.Wernberg.

Adjective B (Latin), rectangular (Stearn 1973).
