Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callophyllis is Callophyllis variegata (Bory) Kützing.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Austrophyllis harveyana (J.Agardh) Womersley & R.E.Norris.

Type Information
Syntype localities: "Ad Novam Hollandiam australem et Tasmaniam (D:na Meredith!)" [New Holland and Tasmania, leg. Meredith]; (Agardh 1876: 230) Notes: Womersley & Norris (1971: 31) give the following data: Type locality: Western Port, Victoria (Harvey, Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 403H; Holotype: Herb. Agardh, LD, 25002. Womersley (1994: 252) gives the following data: Type from Orford, Tasmania (Meredith); holotype in Herb. Agardh, LD, 34170. In Index Nominum Algarum, the type locality of Meristotheca tasmanica J. Agardh 1873: 583 is cited as "Ad Orford Tasmaniae (D. na Meredith). M. tasmanica is cited as a synonym of Austrophyllis harveyana by Womersley (1994: 252) but as a synonym of Faucheopis tasmanica by INA.
