This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Callophyllis rangiferina (R.Brown ex Turner) Womersley
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1973).
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
Womersley & Norris (1971: 37) note that Callophyllis coccinea (Harvey in Hooker & Harvey) Kuetzing was first described as Sphaerococcus australis by Harvey 1844. In 1847, he transferred it to Rhodymenia as R. coccinea ( R. australis Sonder already in existence). Referral of Harvey's epithet Shaerococcus australis to Callophyllis is prevented by the existence of Callophyllis australis Sonder and C. australis J. Agardh. - (19 Jun 2009) - Wendy Guiry

Type locality: Georgetown, Tasmania (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 206). Holotype: Gunn 1279; TCD (Womersley & Norris 1971: 36).
