The type species (holotype) of the genus Gigartina is Gigartina pistillata (S.G.Gmelin) Stackhouse.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sarcothalia radula (Esper) Edyvane & Womersley.

Type locality: Port Phillip Heads, Victoria, Australia; (Edyvane & Womersley 1994: 294) Lectotype: LD; herb. Agardh 23939 (cystocarpic) (Edyvane & Womersley 1994: 294) Notes: Lectotype selected by Edyvane & Womersley (1994: 294); probably collected by Wilson, 30.i.1883.

Origin of Species Name
Participle (Latin), shining, gleaming (Dawes & Mathieson 2008).
