The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium canariense (Grunow) Seoane-Camba ex Prud’homme, Haroun & Audiffred.

Type locality: "Orotava Gran Canaria (L.)" [actually Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Islas Canarias]; (Piccone 1884: 56) "Lectotype": Liebetruth; W; (Afonso Carrillo & Sansón 1999: 158) Notes: Type was illustrated by Prud'homme van Reine & al. (1994, fig. 4) and is marked in the photograph "Lectotype".
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), cartilaginous, flexible but firm and tough (Stearn 1973).
