Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lyngbya is Lyngbya confervoides C.Agardh ex Gomont.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Heterotypic Synonym(s)
Conferva majuscula Dillwyn 1809
Oscillatoria majuscula (Dillwyn) Dillwyn 1817
Elisa majuscula (Dillwyn) S.F.Gray 1821
Phormidium majusculum (Dillwyn) Kützing 1843

Nomenclatural notes
While Harvey (1833: 370) cites Conferva majuscula Dillwyn (1809) in synonymy, Gomont attributes the name to Harvey (1833); Gomont says in relation to Conferva majuscula Dillwyn "synon. dub."! and goes on to say "Faute d'échantillons authentiques, nous ne pouvons faire remonter avec certitude au delà de Harvey le nom de Lyngbya majuscula." and adds further comments about Dillwyn's materials. - (29 Jul 2014) - M.D. Guiry

Habitat notes
Widespread in warm and temperate waters; on Halimeda discoidea (Lipkin & Silva 2002). - (28 May 2010) - Wendy Guiry

Usage notes
Whitton (2011: 91) makes a strong statement about this species: "WARNING! Material of this species from other countries has been shown to contain several biologically highly active molecules and should be treated as a possible carcinogenic risk: minimise contact with the skin." Saxitoxin-producing species (Mohamed & Al-Shehri 2015). Harmful species (Lassus et al. 2017). - (2 May 2014) - M.D. Guiry

General environment
This is a marine/freshwater species.
