This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Codium.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), tomentose, i.e., thickly and evenly covered with short more or less adpressed curled or curved matted hairs (Stearn 1973).

This is a marine species.

Type information
Type locality: England (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 864). Neotype: LINN (Silva 1955: 571). Notes: The neotype was selected from specimens in Stackhouse’s herbarium and is likely to be from Cornwall.
