Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mesophyllum expansum (Philippi) Cabioch & M.L.Mendoza.
Type Information
Type locality: Catania, Sicily; (Athanasiadis & Neto 2010: 334) Lectotype: L; 943.7-84 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 200) Notes: According to INA and Cabioch & Mendoza (2003), the type locality is not given. Woelkerling (1983: 307, fig. 4) designates the original collection of L expansum, consisting of two pieces of thallus, as the lectotype. Athanasiadis & Neto select the larger specimen.
Origin of Species Name
Participle A (Latin), expanded, spread out (Stearn 1973).
