This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Calothrix confervicola C.Agardh ex Bornet & Flahault.

Type locality: "In the Sea, adhering to Fuci & Confervae." [Lectotype from Aberystwyth, Cardigan, Wales]; (Dillwyn 1802: pl. 8) Notes: This type locality was first described by Drouet (1973: 164) (Silva et al., 1996)
