Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hypnea is Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Chondroclonium cornutum Kützing

Type information
Type locality: "ad oras Guineae" fide J. Agardh (1851: 449) [stated by Kützing to be unknown] (Lipkin & Silva 2002: 21). Type: Herb. Lenormand, PC (Lipkin & Silva 2002: 21). Notes: "Locus natalis ignotus" (Silva et al. 1996: 296). "Ad oras Guineae" according to J. Agardh (1851: 449). According to South (2004: 137), the type locality is Guinea Coast, Atlantic Ocean. Lewmanomont (1997: 180) notes that in Kützing (1849), the type citation (Gigartina cornutum Kützing) is "Gigartina cornuta Lamour-Locus natalis ignotus (v.s. in herb. Lenormand)." This specimen (in Lenormand's or Kützing's herbarium) is to be regarded as the lectotype of C. cornutum, later transferred to H. cornuta (Kützing) J. Agardh (1852).

Chiang Y.M. (1997: 170) cites the authority for this species as (Lamouroux) J. Agardh 1852.

Distributional notes
This species has been introduced into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 145), by shipping, oyster cultivation and via the Suez Canal, being first found at Rhodes Island in 1894. It is now widely distributed in the eastern Mediterranean. - (4 Nov 2015) - M.D. Guiry

Widespread in warm seas; intertidal; on rock flat ca. 20 cm below low water, in Chondrophycus papillosus community; on rock flat ca. 1 m below low water, in Caulerpa racemosa community (with parasitic Hypneocolax (Lipkin & Silva 2002). - (3 Jun 2010) - Wendy Guiry
