The type species (holotype) of the genus Wrangelia is Wrangelia penicillata (C.Agardh) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Wrangelia tanegana Harvey.

Type locality: Tassha, Sado Island, Japan Sea; (Noda 1964: 17) Notes: Type (Noda 22 August 1954) probably in Niigata University (Gordon 1972: 43).

Adjective A (Latin), pertaining to Japan (Stearn 1973).
