The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium spinosum f. elongatum (Hatta & Prud'homme) P.C.Silva.

Type locality: south coast of Java, Indonesia; (Silva & al. 1996: 142)

Adjective (Latin), broad-leaved (Stearn 1973).
