The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Metagoniolithon stelliferum (Lamarck) Ducker

Type locality: "Habite les mers Australes ou de la Nouvelle-Hollande. Péron et Lesueur." (Lamarck 1815: 239). Holotype: Péron & Lesueur; PC (Womersly & Johansen 1996: 321).

Nomenclatural notes
Decaisne (1842b, p.124) misspelt the specific epithet as stelligera but it was based on Corallina stellifera Lamarck. Since this time, this error has been perpetuated until Ducker (1974, p. A 37).
