Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Aglaothamnion violaceum (Harvey) Cormaci, G.Furnari & Alongi.

Type Information
Type locality: "On the woodwork of the jetty at Georgetown" [Tasmania]; (Harvey 1859: 334) Holotypes: W.H. Harvey; Herb, Harvey, TCD; Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 517 (Womersley 1998: 234) Notes: Harvey specified Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 517, which is then the holotype and duplicates are isoltypes.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), violet, refers to the blue-red colours nearer blue (Stearn 1973).
