The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnion is Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Antithamnion kylinii N.L.Gardner.

Type locality: Harbor of San Diego, California; (Dawson 1962: 22) Type: Gardner no. 3525; December; growing on floats in the harbor of San Diego; UC; 296617 (Dawson 1962: 21) Notes: Dawson (1962: 21) notes that there is an isotype located in Herb. A. Hancock Foundation.

Adjective (Latin), with secund branching (Lewis & Short 1890).
