The type species (holotype) of the genus Lyngbya is Lyngbya confervoides C.Agardh ex Gomont.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Porphyrosiphon versicolor (Gomont) Anagnostidis & Komárek.

Adjective B (Latin), changing colour, variously coloured (Stearn 1973).
