Isla San Esteban, Gulf of California, Mexico; (Dawson 1961: 198) Holotype: Dept. of Fish and Game; January 26-27, 1960.; at a depth of 5-20 fathoms; Herb. Beaudette Foundation; 2601 (Dawson 1961: 198) Notes: Dawson 21554 from the same locality and date represented by liquid material only.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Thallus: gelatinous, slippery, soft, 3-8 cm high, to 14 cm wide, 0.8-1.2 mm thick, pale red. Blades thickly flattened, lobes with irregular scalloped margins, often undulating slightly. Medulla of loosely interwoven, sparse, colorless filaments within mucilaginous gel; filaments 4-6(-12) µm diam. 45-120 µm long, branching often at right angles and from middle of parent cell. Cortex 150-200 µm thick; filaments radial, dichotomous, deeply pigmented; cells torpedo-shaped, 3-4(-11) µm diam., 10-15(-28) µm long. Holdfast disc-like, inconspicuous. Carpogonial branch 3-celled, in cortical region; auxiliary cells from intercalary cells in inner cortical region. Tetraspores to 6 µm diam.
