Type locality: Port Phillip Heads, Victoria; (Womersley 1996: 51) Holotype: W.H. Harvey; October or November 1854; LD; 26690 (Millar, Saunders, Strachan & Kraft 1996: 51) Notes: Womersley (1996: 51) notes that J. Agardh (1872: 20) independently described Cordylecladia furcellata, based on Harvey Alg. Aust. Exsicc. No. 395E.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), forked; having a small notch at apex (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Plants typically grow on rocks on exposed coasts, either in deep intertidal pools or subtidally at 2-20 m depths, often with their bases buried in 1-2 cm of sand (Millar et al. 1996: 55). The New Zealand samples were found subtidally at depths of 38-43 m, 'ramifying through sponge' (Dalen et al. 2009: 68).
