The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Canistrocarpus magneanus (De Clerck & Coppejans) De Paula & De Clerck.

Holotype locality: Lion Island, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea; (Coppejans et al. 2001: 23) Holotype: Coppejans and De Clerck; 22.6.1994; -8 m, on coral fragments on sand slope, outer reef slope S of the island; GENT; HEC 10212 (Coppejans et al. 2001: 23) Notes: Isotypes deposited in L, PC, BM (Coppejans et al., 2001).
