The type species (holotype) of the genus Pteromonas is Pteromonas aculeata Lemmermann.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pteromonas aequiciliata (Gicklhorn) Chodat.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), strongly angled, with prominent angles (Stearn 1973).
