Dictyosiphon tortilis Gobi
Type locality: Russia: Khabarovsk Krai: Ajan (Scytosiphon tortilis Ruprecht) (Silva 1996-to date). Type: LE (Silva 1996-to date Notes: Type fide Gobi, 1874: 16, footnote (INA).
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), twisted, winding, spiral (Smith & Lockwood 1933).
The authorship of Stictyosiphon tortilis is usually cited as (Ruprecht) Reinke. However, the intended basionym, Scytosiphon tortilis Ruprecht (1850), is illegitimate, being a later homonym of Scytosiphon tortilis (Suhr) Trevisan (1849), based on Asperococcus tortilis Suhr (1836). When Gobi (1874) transferred Ruprecht's illegitimate binomial to Dictyosiphon, Dictyosiphon tortilis Gobi became a legitimate name (Art. 58.1), q.v., and thus may serve as a basionym. Thus, the authorship of Stictyosiphon tortilis is (Gobi) Reinke (M. Wynne 27 Oct. 2006). - (27 Oct 2006) - Wendy Guiry
Plants reported from California lack colourless harirs and probably are not referable to this genus (Wynne 1972).
The only report from the Mediterranean (Adriatic; Munda 1979) is queried by Cormaci et al. (2012: 230) on the basis that no detail was given by Munda of her report of this "cold-boreal species". - (27 Jun 2012) - M.D. Guiry
This is a marine species.
