The type species (holotype) of the genus Hymenocladia is Hymenocladia usnea (R.Brown ex Turner) J.Agardh.

Type locality: King George Sound, Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 367) Lectotype: TCD; Herb. Harvey Travelling Set No. 87 (Womersley 1996: 109) Notes: “... loosley branched form of H[ymenocladia] usnea” (Womersley, 1996: 109).
