The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Parvodinium umbonatum (F.Stein) Carty.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), caudate, i.e., ending with a tail-like appendage (Sreenivasa Rao 1965).
