The type species (lectotype) of the genus Trachelomonas is Trachelomonas volvocina (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Trachelomonas duplex (Deflandre) Couté & Tell.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), hispid, covered with coarse rigid erect hairs or bristles harsh to the touch [or seeming so] (Stearn 1973).
