The type species (lectotype) of the genus Synedra is Synedra balthica Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Fragilaria pararumpens Lange-Bertalot, G.Hofmann & Werum.

Type locality: Battaglia [presumably Battaglia Terme, Veneto], Italy; (Van de Vijver & al. 2021: 2) Lectotype (designated by Van de Vijver & al. 2021: 2): Meneghini; Unknown date; BM; BR-4642, slide prepared from Kützing sample 444 (Van de Vijver & al. 2021: 2) Notes: Isolectotype (here designated): BM 18937, slide prepared from Kützing sample 444, Battaglia, Italy, leg. Meneghini, present in the Natural History Museum London (BM).
