The type species (holotype) of the genus Synechococcus is Synechococcus elongatus (Nägeli) Nägeli.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cyanothece aeruginosa (Nägeli) Komárek.

Type locality: "Luzern, an nassen Felsen" [Lucerne, on wet rocks; Switzerland]; (Nägeli 1849: 56) Epitype (CBFS A-103-1 (dried herbarium material of reference strain, SAG 87.79, originally isolated by W. Koch from a bog pool in Ireland in 1977): (Mares & al. 2019: 596)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), verdigris (Stearn 1973).
