This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Humidophila perpusilla (Grunow) R.L.Lowe, Kociolek, J.R.Johansen, Van de Vijver, Lange-Bertalot & Kopalová.

Type locality: “Habitat inter algas in vitreis diu asservatas" [living between algae long time conserved in glass plates].; (Grunow 1860: 252) Lectotype (designated by Van de Vijver & Goeyers 2022): Original drawing 7g on pl. IV in Grunow (1860).: (Van de Vijver & Goeyers 2022: 2) Notes: Epitype (designated Van de Vijver & Goeyers 2022 for the above lectotype for Navicula perpusilla Grunow): BR-4758 slide prepared from Van Heurck, Types du Synopsis des Diatomées de Belgique n° 212 (Scotland), based on original Walker Arnott sample 703 (Tighnabruaich Glen, Argyll & Bute, Scotland). The epitype is illustrated by Van de Vijver & Goeyers (2022: fig. 4).

Adjective (Latin), exceedingly small.
