Publication date: Marz 1904

Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gomphonema is Gomphonema acuminatum Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gomphoneis rhombica (Fricke) Merino, García, Hernández-Mariné & Fernández.

Type Information
Type locality: "Appleby, Westmoreland (B.A.)" [Cumbria, England]; (Schmidt 1904: pl. 248: fig. 1) Notes: "B.A." indicates that Fricke and/or M.Schmidt examined material in Berg Akademie, Berlin. : G. rhombicum FRICKE)." Plate 248: fig. 1 was drawn by M.Schmidt but the name should be attributed to Fricke.

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.
